They say grief is like a wave crashing over you when you least expect it. And losing my wife was the most giant wave I’ve ever faced. It hit me hard and left me feeling lost, vulnerable, and lonely.
But as time passed, I learned to cope with my grief in ways that helped me overcome my loneliness and find a sense of peace.
Like a ship navigating rough waters, I had to find my way through the emotions of losing someone so dear to me. It wasn’t easy, but I found techniques that worked for me and helped me weather the storm.
In this article, I want to share those techniques with you in hopes that they may help others struggling with their feelings of loneliness after losing a loved one.
Loneliness and Me – An Introduction
After a brave battle over a year, I lost my wife to metastatic cancer. Her death left me feeling empty and alone as if a part of me was missing.
However, her passing also taught me how to deal with grief and overcome loneliness by cherishing the memories we shared while finding new connections with others.
How I Lost My Wife to Metastatic Cancer
As the cancer spread throughout her body, it became clear that Radha’s battle with the disease would not have a happy ending. Seeing my wife suffer so much was devastating, and I felt powerless in the face of this terrible disease.
We did everything we could – chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgery – but nothing seemed to work. Finally, as Radha deteriorated rapidly in February and March 2023, we knew it was only a matter before she passed away.
Radha’s end-of-life care was handled with utmost care and compassion by the healthcare providers at Karunashraya Hospice Center in Bangalore. As Radha’s condition worsened, the team of healthcare professionals at the center worked together to provide her with exceptional palliative home care.
The healthcare team at Karunashraya Hospice Center ensured that Radha was always comfortable, managing her pain and symptoms effectively. Moreover, they ensured she received the necessary medications, treatments, and therapies to keep her pain-free and comfortable.
Apart from managing her physical symptoms, the team also supported us. They regularly checked in on our emotional well-being, providing counseling and support to help us cope with the challenges of her illness.
They also ensured that we were well-informed about her condition and the care that she needed. They provided education and training to us on managing her symptoms and caring for her at home, ensuring we were equipped to provide the necessary care and support.
Overall, Radha received exceptional palliative home care from the healthcare providers at Karunashraya Hospice Center in Bangalore. They provided her with the care, support, and comfort she needed during her final days, ensuring she lived her last days with dignity and peace.
Coping techniques and grief management strategies were also given to me, which helped me cope with my emotions while supporting Radha. This experience has made me more aware of the importance of cancer awareness, early detection efforts, and the need for better end-of-life care for patients and their families.
How I felt lonely after she died
Even though people surrounded me, the absence of Radha made me feel more isolated than ever. The emotional turmoil within me was so intense that even the slightest interaction with others didn’t bring any relief. Coping mechanisms weren’t working for me anymore. I felt as if a part of me had died along with her. It felt like a tree cut in half.
Radha and I were each other’s confidants; now that she was gone, no one else could fill that void.
It was an overwhelming experience that started taking a toll on my mental health. However, I quickly accepted reality and started opening up about my feelings. The healing process began slowly as I built friendships with dear and near ones.

It’s not an easy road to travel, but I’ve found peace amidst the pain by taking small daily steps toward healing. And while my heart will forever carry the love for my wife, I know she would want me to live on with happiness.
