He was young and handsome; her pride and joy but he died in pain, blind, sick, and paralyzed at the tender age of 17. If only he had known the dangers of masturbating, then he might have been able to live a better life.
“This, in a nutshell, is the advice given to young French men in 1830. At that time, masturbating was considered by moralizers and doctors as a disease which leads to early death.”
A physician named Balthazar Bekkers published a book called Onania in 1716 warning readers that masturbation would cause them to suffer from:
- disturbances of the stomach and digestive system
- anorexia (lack of appetite)
- nausea
- weakness of the lungs
- cough
- hoarseness
- difficulty swallowing
- weakness of the heart
- dizziness
- shortness of breath
- palpitations
- chest pains
- backache
- urinary incontinence
- impotence
- back pain
- skin rashes
- hair falling out
- insomnia
- depression
- forgetfulness
- irritability
- confusion
- hallucinations
- delirium
- seizures
- coma
- death
Yeah, but still…
In A Medicinal Dictionary published in 1743–45, Dr. Robert James wrote that onanism was responsible for “the most shockingly bad and usually incurable disorders.”
In another medical book, L’Onanisme by Dr. Samuel-Auguste Tissot wrote that semen was an essential body oil. If you wasted it through masturbation it caused:
- a noticeable decline in physical health, mental clarity, reasoning ability
- blurry vision
- arthritis
- weakness of the genitourinary system
- blood in the urine (hematuria)
- loss of appetite
- headaches
and a large variety of other symptoms.
These people weren’t quacks; they were highly esteemed and reputable scientists working in the age of enlightenment. It is not surprising that their apparently informed and scientific views would become so widespread in the nineteenth century that they could eventually turn into the cautionary tale of “Le livre sans titre.” (The Untitled Book).
This edition of the eBook was written by Jim Edmondson who used a scanner to convert the original paper copy into digital format.

In conclusion, masturbation has become such a common part of our lives that we often fail to realize its true dangers. While it’s certainly possible to masturbate safely, it’s far from easy. In fact, it’s probably safer to avoid doing so altogether than to attempt it under less-than-ideal circumstances.
The truth is that masturbation is a very powerful force, and it’s capable of causing serious damage to your body and your psyche. For example, if you spend too much time indulging in self-pleasure, you run the risk of developing erectile dysfunction. This can lead to various illnesses. On top of that, frequent masturbation can cause depression, anxiety, and stress. Most importantly, it drains your spiritual energy.
If you decide to abstain from it, then you’ll be able to live a healthier, happier life.
