Vethathiri Maharishi’s School Days
At the age of five, Vethathiri joined a Christian Missionary school near his house. He was a favorite of his teachers. His father taught him a few religious songs. He regularly sang and prayed to God at the Vinayaka temple near home in early mornings. He was a bright student and studied well.
Vethathiri’s father could not pay for his education for long. He dropped out of school after the third standard. He taught the child his profession. Vethathiri started learning simple weaving tasks and helped around for his father. He grew a passion for weaving and became a full time weaver very early in life. Weaving became his sport, hobby and profession while children of his age were busy playing sports and having fun. In about two years, much to the reluctance of his father, Vethathiri persisted with his weaving expedition and became proficient in it.
Vethathiri Maharishi’s Moment of Truth as a Child
Vethathiri was about ten years old. One early morning he was busy weaving a cloth at home when his usual Ragi porridge was getting delayed. His mother would usually invite him for lunch around 12:30 p.m. As Vethathiri peeped into this small house, he found his mother wiping her tears. His father was sitting near her. Vethathiri came to hug his mother’s legs and with tears in his eyes asked why his mother was crying.
Vethathiri’s mother couldn’t control herself and broke down in tears. There was not even a grain at home for her to feed the child. Vethathiri noticed his parents stomachs and realized that they hadn’t eaten for many days. His mother went out to borrow some porridge from a relative and asked the child to have it. Vethathiri forced his parents to share it equally.
The incident led him to learn about poverty, money, wealth and hunger. He started thinking about how to get out of poverty. It is his thinking about poverty that led him on a path of discovery.
